Jersey Fine Tea

Nestled in the heart of Jersey in the Channel Islands, Jersey Fine Tea is a family-run enterprise that embarked on a transformative journey to redefine the island's agricultural landscape. Established in 2017, their roots trace back to a visionary idea: to diversify farmland away from traditional crops and intensively farmed land to introduce tea cultivation as a sustainable and innovative alternative.

Guided by meticulous research and a commitment to ethical farming, they identified sheltered microclimates around the island conducive to nurturing Camellia sinensis tea bushes. The result was the conversion of acres of land into thriving tea gardens, marking a departure from conventional farming practices.

Their dedication to sustainability became evident in the conservation efforts, transforming neglected hedgerows into traditionally laid hedges, now a haven for wildlife and introducing newly planted hedges with diverse native species to support local wildlife and act as a shelter belt to protect the tea gardens. Biodiversity enhancements and monitoring, work hand-in-hand with the tea growing to help improve and support species found around the tea gardens and island as a whole.

In November 2020, Jersey Fine Tea proudly unveiled its inaugural batches of whole-leaf black, green, and white teas, each a testament to complexity and rich expression. Since then, they have worked on developing new teas and honing their craft in producing speciality loose leaf teas. Beyond crafting artisanal teas, their narrative is interwoven with a commitment to the coexistence of people and nature. Being more than merely a business; they are a story that began with a question and evolved into a blend of ethical farming, biodiversity conservation, tea cultivation, and the artisanal crafting of fine teas.

With a horticultural background and as a Chartered Horticulturalist, Matt first grew tea as an experimental crop when studying and subsequently grew tea out of interest. Years later, this relevant experience, along with his expertise in land management, culminated in discussions about the setting up of tea gardens which then went on to become Jersey Fine Tea. As the Bartlett family grow this project, their unwavering passion and enthusiasm for the art of growing and producing tea symbolises a true labour of love. In every cup of tea poured, the essence of Jersey's land and soul is captured, marking a new chapter in the island's tea legacy.
